Chapter 6
Bryce, dressed in one of the dead vampire’s clothing—one with more down-to-earth taste than the first three he’d seen—walked ahead of Cameron, listening for any sign of the others who were yet to arrive.
The woods were quiet. The creatures of the forest had hidden during the battle and had yet to reappear. If Cameron hadn’t been just a few feet behind him, Bryce might have taken their continued silence as a sign that the other vampires were near. But one vampire or twenty, the animals’ reaction would be the same—stay low.
The loss of this sign meant Bryce needed to be more alert than ever, but his mind wandered. To the rogue.
Kacie had stayed with Rachel.
Asked a day earlier, he would have laughed at the idea that the female wolf would choose protecting another over saving her own hide. But then when she had said that was her intention, that she was leaving Rachel, Cameron, and... him, shock and hurt had lanced through him. He’d snapped out of it quickly, reminding himself who and what she was, but still, the fact that their bond had meant so little to her had wrapped around him and squeezed, cutting off logic and the flicker of warmth that had been building inside him.
And then she’d stayed, blowing on that flicker again, stoking it back to life.
He’d walked a quarter of a mile before he realized that he’d lost track of his surroundings. He stopped immediately. The woods were still quiet, but... He held up one hand, signaling for Cameron to stop also.
Something was off.
He turned, preparing to ask the vampire if he could pinpoint the reason for Bryce’s sudden unease, and felt the cold slide of silver plunging into his shoulder.

Kacie paced to the front of the barn. It was light. Bryce and Cameron had been gone for hours. And now, with the sun up, they would be gone for hours more. Cameron, at least. The vampire couldn’t travel in the day.
Bryce might come by himself, but Kacie couldn’t count on it. She had to assume that she and Rachel were on their own at least until nightfall.
And then, of course, she would be back to wondering what besides Bryce might stalk out of the trees.
Rachel, back in her human form, lay on the ground panting. “Not here?”
Kacie wrapped her arms around her stomach and shook her head. “No, but I didn’t expect them back this soon. It will be tonight.”
“Are you sure?” The new wolf looked even more sickly than she had before. Not long after the men had left, she’d gone into convulsions, switching rapidly from wolf to human and back again, over and over. Kacie had tried reaching for Rachel’s wolf as Bryce had reached for hers, but the connection never clicked. She’d been left with nothing to do except sit beside the miserable woman and make promises she had no way of keeping.
Now Rachel had at least settled into human form, but based on her color and inability to even hold her head up, Kacie didn’t think that was much of a positive.
